Designing with Engineers

Please excuse the camera-phone image. It is what it is.Yesterday I attended my weekly meeting with the Nyambogo group of Engineers Without Borders. We attempted to mock up our ideas for the rainwater catchment. As you may be able to tell from the pictures...We're working on a support structure for the material that will be suspended above the collection chamber. Next week I'm going to be building a scale model of the final design, which is always a little scary, but I think it's a solid…See More

process update

I've been weaving several baskets to find a good size and proportion. Also the basket lid doubles as a compression lid and another bag. The side will have an integrated lock holster.

Here's a basket and harness attached to the bikes. As you can see I've integrated (will integrate in the final) all the hardware into the rack for a more comfortable experience while carrying.…

enlightenment, erosion, lifeboats, and pirates

I've been following Jeff Vail's blog lately. He has nuanced and intelligent analyses of our current geopolitical and environmental situation.

Enlightenment, Control, Erosion

In his latest post Jeff outlines three paths to sustainability: enlightenment, control, and erosion.

enlightenment- vouluntary and universal sustainability

control- top down imposition (think… Continue

Goodmorning Handlebar Basket I found the first two of these new bike interpretations pretty endearing, especially the the children's trike and abstracted floral basket. However, the one that caught my eye the most however was the newly discovered "handlebar basket"…

Africa: Reflections and Narrative Story! (Part III)

We hurdled through several more towns in our multi-ton sardine tin. First Rongo, which marked the end of the highlands, then Awendo, and finally Migori, which was a well-populated town. It was here especially that having George with us would pay off.

Apparently some drivers will only take you a short distance and then ask for more cash, and some go to the wrong place entirely. We were pushed and pulled in various directions in a crowd vying… Continue

brilliantly simple

These are great. Why? Because I get it and like it in less than 5 seconds.

Then I want to know more.

What a great thread to start! This is definitely an important topic and one that we see an increasing amount of coverage on. You should be able to find some great articles just by doing a simple internet search. As someone on the ground in… Continue
